Wide & Narrow Alleys

Visitors to Chengdu, beyond the iconic Giant Pandas, often explore the city’s charming “new old” walking streets, such as Wenshu Temple and Jinli Street. These areas are celebrated for embodying the essence of “Real Chengdu,” with their historical architecture and glimpses into old Chengdu lifestyles. The Alleys, including Kuanxiangzi, Zhaixiangzi, and Jinxiangzi, all dating back to the Qing Dynasty, are essential destinations undergoing impressive redesign and restoration.

These cultural enclaves blend traditional settings with modern craftsmanship, featuring stone-paved paths, blue-brick buildings, and quadrangle courtyards adorned with bronze-studded wooden doors. Within, visitors discover a delightful array of teahouses, cafes, bars, bookstores, boutiques, and restaurants. The alleys offer a rich tapestry of experiences, from exploring authentic period architecture and museums to enjoying art displays, shopping, opera performances, and diverse dining options ranging from local delicacies to international cuisines like ice cream and coffee.

Evenings are particularly enchanting, as locals gather for leisurely strolls and exercise amidst beautifully lit buildings that evoke the ambiance of a period film set. For a comprehensive Chengdu experience, combining visits to Qingyang Temple, Dufu’s Cottage, and Shufengyayun Sichuan Opera enhances the journey into the city’s cultural and historical depths.

Established in 1988, it has evolved into a comprehensive facility comprising a research center, an open research laboratory, a veterinary hospital, panda enclosures, and a dedicated playground for these beloved creatures. Renowned as the foremost panda sanctuary globally, it plays a crucial role in the conservation of giant pandas and other endangered species.

In early 2022, the base underwent a significant expansion, increasing its area from 69 hectares to 238 hectares. This expansion aims to provide more ample space for China’s national treasures, allowing for the development of panda-friendly pavilions and enhancing the overall visitor experience.
